First Costume Design Meeting

I talked with Anthony and Cheryl the other day. Again all went well. This makes me insanely happy, for obvious reasons. And it also scares the shit out of me. When do things start going wrong? I know they have to at some point; nothing ever runs this smoothly. My brain has gone into 'adverting upcoming disasters' mode.
I have a follow up meeting with Anthony this Friday. We left the first meeting on the same page, so I'm excited to see what happens.

And I'm also glad that Cheryl caught my Buffy episode reference. I felt like an uber nerd using it, but now I just feel like a regular nerd.

First Set Meeting

I had a meeting with Brian and Patrick about the set today. This marks my first design meeting ever - I've always taken on all design elements myself. From others' experiences, I went in expecting the worst. I'm told its not a design meeting until there's fighting.
We talked about the show - how I view the characters, and what I wished to do with the meaning. I told them images I had originally seen, and what I had hoped for. It seems everything went over really well. We're all on exactly the same page; something I wanted, but didn't expect to happen this quickly. The fact that it went so well, literally scares me for what will go wrong later. It can't all go this swimmingly, can it? Then again, I have always been one to plan for disaster, and worry continually. It keeps me on my game.
From what I can tell, most of what I want will come from lights. Also, it seems that this should not be too terribly difficult to achieve. I hope this is correct. I don't want to be the demanding, tyrant director, but I would still like to see the elements I want highlighted come to life. We shall see.
I have another design meeting about costumes coming up on Sunday. Hopefully this will go as smoothly.

More to follow.

Discussions

I had a discussion with John Trevellini today about the script. We quickly talked about characters, story, but most importantly, revisions. John feels like the script needs quite a few touch ups, and I agree. While the main story will stay the same, and the characters will remain unchanged, the dialog and format of it will be reworked. Ald's monologues are a prime target for rewrites, amoung other things.
John will be occasionally sending me updates of revisions, and we'll be looking over everything together in true collaboration fashion. The final script will be completed no later than Sept. 15th. While that date seems slightly intimidating, since the process will be open before this, I feel little fear. Especially since we are on the exact same page about character and story.
My plans for Auditions on August 31st, and Callbacks afterwards, will not have to change at all. John has reassured me that all characters, their motives and their feelings, will remain the same.

In addition to this discussion, I have sent in short character descriptions for people to review before auditions. They are as follows:

Hangman - He is a guy with a very gruff exterior. He has the presence of a grizzly, hard man, when in actuality he is a big teddy bear. The only people who know of his true disposition are his wife, and those that are close enough to see them together. He has a pretty dark sense of humor, and very little gets to him.
Wife - She is a woman who puts love and family before all. She's always looking for new ways to add a spark to her marriage with the hangman, and always finds great joy in being a mother. She has a playful streak in her, but above all, she is quite innocent in nature.
Ald - He is a storyteller, looking to be adored and admired for his work. He is quite mischievous, and impish in his ways and has a tendency to treat everything as a game. He is also very naive in realizing the trouble he can cause; and trouble is something that he purposefully and unintentionally causes a lot of.

That's the latest for now. More updates to follow.

Noosemaker PowerPoint

I made a powerpoint for The Noosemaker, highlighting what I think are the main ideas, and visualizing some of my inspiration for this production. This is still in pre-production, so nothing is set in stone. But it is a good starting point.

Here is a link to the powerpoint:
